Biodegradability and methane productivity during anaerobic co-digestion of refractory leachate

چکیده
Mature landfill leachate was anaerobically co-digested with synthetic wastewater to evaluate the degradability and methane productivity in various mixing ratios. The proportion of leachate was increased in three equal steps from 0% to 100%, and then decreased again through the same steps back to 0%. Both COD removal efficiency and methane production decreased as the leachate proportion in the influent was increased. When the influent contained 100% leachate, and when 33% synthetic wastewater was reintroduced, methane productionwas suppressed relative to COD removal. During the same phases, NH4 accumulated, suggesting an excess of NH þ 4 mineralization versus uptake. After 100% leachate was supplied, methane yield decreased to near zero, and the production of methane remained suppressed relative to COD reduction even as more synthetic wastewater was reintroduced, until 100% synthetic wastewater was resupplied. This decline in methane yield might be caused by deterioration of methanogenic bacterial activity following treatment of 100% leachate. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Assessment of two-phase olive mill solid waste and microalgae co-digestion to improve methane production and process kinetics.
Olive mill solid waste (OMSW) is a pollutant waste coming from olive oil elaboration by the two-phase centrifugation system. OMSW has a high organic matter content and unbalanced carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, 31/1, which avoids obtaining high methane yields in the anaerobic digestion of this waste. In the present study a microalgae, Dunaliella salina, was employed as co-substrate for the OMSW...
متن کاملThe “chemical Oxygen Demand / Total Volatile Acids” Ratio as an Anaerobic Treatability Indicator for Landfill Leachates
In some operational circumstances a fast evaluation of landfill leachate anaerobic treatability is necessary, and neither Biochemical Methane Potential nor BOD/COD ratio are fast enough. Looking for a fast indicator, this work evaluated the anaerobic treatability of landfill leachate from São Carlos-SP (Brazil) in a pilot scale Anaerobic Sequence Batch Biofilm Reactor (AnSBBR). The experiment w...

Background and Objective: In recent years, management and disposal of municipal solid waste has become a global problem and the most important environmental concern. Anaerobic digestion is a cost-effective solution for treatment of both solid waste and wastewater. The aim of this study was to investigate the positive or negative effects of calcium chloride content in anaerobic digestion process...
متن کاملDistributed model of solid waste anaerobic digestion: effects of leachate recirculation and pH adjustment.
A distributed model of solid waste digestion in a 1-D bioreactor with leachate recirculation and pH adjustment was developed to analyze the balance between the rates of polymer hydrolysis/acidogenesis and methanogenesis during the anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste (MSW). The model was calibrated on previously published experimental data generated in 2-L reactors filled with shredded ...
